A line from the Gospel this Sunday reads, “Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you” (Jn 6: 26-28). Few athletic accomplishments express as clearly the necessity of hard work and tireless determination than do the achievements of the Olympic athletes. The sweet taste of victory comes through an array of challenges, not least of which being the daily grind of the repeated necessities of life. While these athletes are rightly lauded for their unparalleled feats, our ailing bodies remind us that the glory of gold inevitably fades and the shining of silver eventually tarnishes. Our Lord calls us to turn the hunger we have for greatness from earthly goals to heavenly ones. May we find inspiration from these athletes to not only grow in human excellence, but all the more to use their example as an encouragement for ourselves in the journey toward the unfading Crown of Glory.
